Notes from the Road - Jay Semko

Notes from the Road

Notes from the Road is Music Canada’s artist tour diary. Canadian artists on tour around the world will share their stories of fans, gigs and the “good, bad and the ugly” of touring!

I love Nova Scotia, I love travelling, and I love playing music……but I've been on a lot of airplanes lately, and the trip from Saskatoon (where I'm currently residing) to Halifax is a long one, with a layover and a switcheroo in Toronto. I'm travelling light - playing solo acoustic at the Lockeport Sea Derby Festival, and although I am often alone on the road, this time I am with my partner, Colli, and truly enjoying a break from the usual solitude while travelling. Watching True Grit without the sound for about the 5th time, while going through various documents and to-do lists on the laptop. Played with the Northern Pikes in Toronto the previous weekend - week before that was in San Francisco….all great trips - spent 5 weeks before that travelling from Stoon to Vancouver to Sydney,NS and back to Stoon - put almost 15,000 km on the vehicle - promoting my latest solo single "That Kind of Blue" to Canadian country radio (plus a few gigs along the way, including Stan Rogers Folk Festival in Canso, NS) - so, I can't really complain about flying.

This trip is definitely more relaxed - no hardcore deadline drives - all pretty simple, in the big picture, and Nova Scotia (Cape Breton in particular) is where my mother's side of the family (MacAskill) is from. There are a couple of different schools of thought regarding loosening or not loosening guitar strings for the plane - I like to loosen them - during our heavy travel days with the Pikes, a couple of guitar necks were broken in transit, and I really love my Gibson J-45, so taking no chances….theoretically….day one is relaxed, and it shows in the facial expression exhibited in the photo……..food, coffee, a good night's sleep, then Lockeport tomorrow…..

Jay Semko is a successful solo artist as well as the vocalist/bassist with the Northern Pikes.  Jay has just recently released a self-titled album that you can buy online.  He can't sit still - if you want to see one of his gigs he's got some coming up in various parts of the country - check them out.

Music Canada Editor: Strange picture Jay ... not sure what it's meant to be?  A boat load of pizza???  But I like your hat.  If any readers can explain the significance of the pizza slice in the boat, feel free to enlighten me!
